ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Arghun, AH 683-690 / AD 1284-1291. Dinar (Gold, 24 mm, 4.31 g, 6 h), Tabriz, AH [6]87 = 1288/9. Within a circle, ‘al-ḥamd lillāh / lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / ṣalla Allāh ʿalayh / wa sallam’ (‘Praise be to Allah. There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and grant him peace’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dīnār bi madīnat Tabrīz sana sabʿ wa thamānīn’ (‘In the name of Allah. This dinar was struck in the city of Tabriz in the year [6]87’ in Arabic). Rev. Within a dotted circle, ‘Hakanu Ariba / Argunun / Deledkeguluk / sen Arigu’, followed by the word ‘altan’ in the right field (‘Struck by Arghun, the vice-regal governor of the Khan. Pure gold’ in Uighur); at the bottom, ‘Arghūn’ (‘Arghun’ in Arabic). Album 2144. Diler AR-155. Rare. Minor edge split, otherwise, good very fine.
